The Dutch hurdy-gurdy & bagpipe society is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and decided to publish a tune book for the occasion. I helped create it! It was presented last Saturday during their annual workshop weekend.
My fellow band member Wouter Kuyper, together with Lies Sommer, another folk musician, had composed six songs especially for this anniversary. They taught it to people during a series of courses over the past year and performed them at a concert last weekend. Because it would be a shame not to do anything more with them afterwards, the idea arose to include them in a tune booklet, along with sheet music for other songs.
Lies and Wouter also coordinated the project of developing that booklet and ensured that music was collected. As I have experience with that (I self-published my own Alice in Wonderland book and also compiled and had printed my own dressmaker’s book), I volunteered to subsequently proofread the content, lay out the inside of the booklet, and prepare it for printing.
Being a marketeer, I ofcourse made sure that both inner design and the cover design complied with the foundation’s corporate identity (that I more or less established myself when I made their website, which I based on their promotional posters… 🙂)
Besides a foreword and introduction, the booklet consists of three sections: part 1 contains the songs composed especially for the anniversary, part 2 contains songs submitted by teachers and participants of the foundation’s events, and part 3 contains ‘classics’ that are often played during sessions. Throughout the booklet, there are anecdotes here and there that explain why the song in question was written or chosen and/or its link to the hurdy-gurdy & bagpipe foundation.
I also contributed a song that I wrote for my band Androneda, so you can find ‘De Cisthematische Scottish’ in part 2! 😊
