Medieval pouches

I often have fabric scraps left over after sewing clothes. If it’s ‘modern’ fabric, I usually toss them out, as it just takes up space in my closet and there isn’t much else you can do with it. It’s a different story with linen and wool, though. I can reuse those materials – for instance, when making or applying designs to banners for LARP or historical reenactment. Or, as in this case, for medieval-style pouches / bags!

The outer layer is made of wool, and the lining is linen.

The carrying strap, drawstrings (woven using a lucet), and tassels require a fair amount of yarn, so you can’t simply use scraps for them. Instead, I used wool and silk yarns that aren’t suitable for card weaving. The wool (blue) snaps too easily when putting under tension for weaving, and the silk yarn (grey) is much thicker than my other silk yarns, so it doesn’t combine well with them. This way, those yarns get put to good use after all!

I’ve already made one for myself, so I made these to sell at re-enactment events. It’s a nice way to fill out the market stall a bit more, and it allows me to recoup the cost of materials I buy for making clothes!
